The right-wing populist head of government Orban, who has been in office without interruption since 2010, and his Fidesz party must seriously expect to lose power for the first time in 16 years. The bourgeois Tisza party of Orban's challenger Peter Magyar has been consistently ahead of Fidesz in the polls for months.
Magyar himself comes from the inner Fidesz circle, but categorically broke with Orban's system almost two years ago. However, due to the imponderables of the complex Hungarian electoral system and the overwhelming superiority of the media controlled by Orban, Magyar's victory is not a certainty.
