"The climate conference must hear this truth: without living forests and people, there is no salvation for the climate," says Brazilian activist Alessandra Korap Munduruku, who is taking part.
Dozens of boats carrying flags and slogans sailed along the coast of Belém as a parade on Wednesday (local time) - manned by numerous activists, including many indigenous people. In the bay, there are events and information on the topics of climate and the environment, as well as lots of music, dance and art - including a mini Trump statue called "The Orange Plague".
The large participation of civil society in Brazil is a contrast to previous climate conferences in recent years: In the authoritarian-ruled countries of Azerbaijan, Egypt and the United Arab Emirates, no protests were allowed outside the grounds.
