Following President Donald Trump's announcement of a reduction in US troops in Germany, Poland has reaffirmed its willingness to accept more US soldiers. "We have the necessary infrastructure," said President Karol Nawrocki during a visit to the armed forces in Lithuania. "I will encourage Trump to keep these soldiers in Europe." The country in which he stations them is the decision of the US President.

Against the backdrop of increasing tensions between Trump and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz (CDU), the US government recently ordered the partial withdrawal of soldiers from Germany. Around 5,000 of them are to be deployed over the next six to twelve months - according to Trump, this could end up being "far more".

During Nawrocki's inaugural visit to the White House last fall, Trump assured the right-wing conservative head of state that no US soldiers would be withdrawn from Poland. Should Warsaw wish to do so, there could even be more, Trump said.

Poland has long hoped for a permanent US military base

Nato member Poland has long hoped for a larger permanent US military base in the country. This hope was particularly high in 2003, when the USA invaded Iraq. Unlike Germany, Poland was part of the "coalition of the willing" at the time. For a while, the country therefore thought there was a good chance that the US base in Ramstein would be relocated to Poland.

According to Nawrocki, there are currently almost 10,000 American soldiers stationed in Poland. Most of them rotate regularly between various US military bases in Europe. There is also a small permanent garrison in Poznan, which provides infrastructure support for all US soldiers stationed in Poland.
