Polish President Andrzej Duda has called on the USA to station nuclear weapons in his country as a deterrent against possible Russian aggression.

It is obvious that US President Donald Trump could transfer nuclear warheads from Western European countries or the USA to Poland, Duda told the British daily newspaper "Financial Times" (Thursday). He had also recently discussed this with the US special envoy for Ukraine, Keith Kellogg, during his visit to Warsaw.

Duda went on to say that NATO had expanded eastwards in 1999. It was therefore obvious to him that 26 years later the infrastructure of the defense alliance would be relocated accordingly. "I don't just think that the time has come. It would also be safer if these weapons were already here."

Poland, an EU and NATO member state, is one of the closest military allies of Ukraine, which is under attack from Russia. It also borders the Russian exclave of Kaliningrad and Russia's ally Belarus.

In Poland, the president is commander-in-chief of the army. Duda had already stated in April 2024 that his country was in favor of the deployment of US nuclear weapons. Now, however, he formulated it much more urgently and named Russia as a possible aggressor.

The USA has had nuclear weapons stationed in several European countries for many decades. There is no official information on this - in addition to Germany, nuclear weapons are also said to be stored in the Netherlands, Belgium, Italy and Turkey. The US government has not yet indicated that it is considering stationing them in Eastern Europe - which Moscow would probably see as a direct provocation.
