Police have shot down a suspicious person during a major operation in Munich city center near the Israeli Consulate General. Officers had fired several shots there in the morning, a police spokesman said.

There are currently no indications of any other suspects. It initially remained unclear whether there were any other casualties.

The police are deploying numerous officers and a helicopter in the area around the Consulate General and the Nazi Documentation Center. Witnesses had reported several shots being fired in the area. The police called on the public to avoid the area. Roadblocks were set up.

The background to the operation on the anniversary of the Olympic bombing in Munich in 1972 was initially unknown. On September 5, 1972, Palestinian terrorists shot dead two men in the Olympic Village and took nine hostages.

Around 18 hours later, a rescue attempt ended with the death of the nine Israeli hostages, a police officer and five of the assassins. The terrorists wanted to free more than 200 prisoners in Israel and the RAF terrorists Andreas Baader and Ulrike Meinhof.
