Pope Leo XIV once again called for an end to the violence in Ukraine during the traditional Angelus prayer in Rome. "I strongly reiterate my urgent appeal for an immediate ceasefire and for serious efforts to establish a dialog," said the head of the Catholic Church in St. Peter's Square.

"Unfortunately, the war in Ukraine continues to sow death and destruction," said Leo. He said it was time for those responsible to abandon the logic of weapons and, with the support of the international community, take the path of negotiations and peace. "The voice of weapons must be silenced," said the first American to sit in Peter's chair. "I call on everyone not to fall into indifference, but to show solidarity through prayers and concrete signs of charity."
Russia has been waging a devastating war of aggression against the neighboring country for more than three and a half years. More than 20 people were killed on Thursday night in the heaviest Russian airstrikes with missiles and drones since the end of July.
Pope: "End the pandemic of weapons"
Following the shooting near a Catholic school in the US state of Minneapolis, which left two children dead, Leo also called for an end to gun violence. "Let us implore God to end the pandemic of guns, big and small, that is infecting our world," said the Chicago-born pontiff.
