Vatican Pope Francis makes a surprise appearance in St. Peter's Square

Pope Francis, who is ill, made a surprising public appearance on Sunday. At the end of a mass in front of 20,000 faithful, the head of the Catholic Church was wheeled into St. Peter's Square in a wheelchair. "Have a good Sunday everyone. Thank you," said Francis in an audibly strained voice in Italian.

An archbishop had previously read out the Pope's sermon. Francis returned to the Vatican two weeks ago after 38 days of inpatient treatment in a clinic in Rome. The mass, part of the Holy Year 2025, was specially dedicated to the sick.
