After recent confident signals, Pope Francis has spent another quiet night in hospital. This was announced by the Holy See in the morning.

On Tuesday evening, those close to the 88-year-old said that his condition was stable. Furthermore, a slight improvement in his condition could be observed. However, Francis' clinical picture remains complex.

The head of the Catholic Church has been receiving treatment at the Gemelli Clinic in Rome for almost four weeks. He is suffering from bilateral pneumonia. Francis continues to be supplied with additional oxygen almost constantly. During the day via a tube in his nose, at night he is usually mechanically ventilated with a mask on his nose and mouth.

Return to the Vatican still unclear

Despite the recent confident signals, the Vatican is not yet preparing for the Pope's return to his residence. There is no date for a possible release from the clinic. In recent days, there has been speculation that Francis' apartment in Casa Santa Marta could be prepared for further medical treatment.

This Thursday marks twelve years since Francis was elected head of the Catholic Church as successor to the German pontiff Benedict XVI. In April, the Vatican will also be celebrating Easter. It is still unclear how the celebrations will take place. Normally, these are a marathon of events for the Pope.
