According to official reports, Pope Francis spent another night in hospital without any additional complications. "The Pope spent a quiet night. He is resting," said a brief statement from the Holy See in the morning. The Vatican did not initially provide any further information on the 88-year-old's state of health.

The head of the Catholic Church has been receiving treatment at the Gemelli Clinic in Rome for more than three weeks. He is suffering from pneumonia. Since being admitted on February 14, there have been several complications: He suffered four bouts of acute respiratory distress and sometimes had to be mechanically ventilated. For this purpose, he is fitted with a mask that covers his nose and mouth.
Most recently "slight improvement"
However, the Holy See recently reported a "gradual, slight improvement" in a medical bulletin. "The Holy Father's clinical condition has remained stable in recent days and thus shows a good response to treatment," it said on Saturday. Francis does not have a fever. The next bulletin is to be published on Monday evening.
There is currently no hope of an early release from hospital. The doctors are reluctant to give a prognosis on the further course of the disease. Speculation about the establishment of a special infirmary in the Pope's residence in the Vatican, the Casa Santa Marta, was initially rejected by Francis' entourage, as reported by the Italian daily newspaper "La Repubblica".
