Following the US attack on Venezuela and the arrest of the authoritarian head of state Nicolás Maduro, Pope Leo XIV has made a clear appeal for prudence. He is following the developments in the country with great concern, said the head of the Catholic Church after the traditional Angelus prayer in St. Peter's Square. The welfare of the Venezuelan people must "take precedence over every other consideration".

The Pontiff called for "violence to be overcome and for paths of justice and peace to be taken". In addition, the "sovereignty of the country must be guaranteed, the rule of law enshrined in the constitution must be safeguarded and the human and civil rights of each and everyone must be respected". Leo also emphasized that work must now be done to build a "peaceful future of cooperation, stability and unity".
