According to the authorities, the electricity and water supply has collapsed in large parts of the southern Ukrainian region of Zaporizhzhia, which is occupied by Russian troops. "Due to the high air temperatures, critical overloads have occurred in the power supply system of the Zaporizhzhya region," said the Moscow-appointed governor of the region, Yevgeny Balitsky, according to the state news agency Tass. The blackout affected the two largest cities conquered by Russia in the region, Melitopol and Berdyansk, among others.
He added that the water supply had also been cut off there and in several other districts due to the problems with the power grid. He did not give any details on the length of the outage.
In fact, temperatures in the region were well over 30 degrees Celsius during the day. The infrastructure, which is considered outdated and has been further damaged by the war, is not up to the task.
Russia has had parts of the Zaporizhzhya region under its control since March 2022. This includes the Zaporizhzhya nuclear power plant in the city of Enerhodar. The plant had to be shut down due to the ongoing fighting over it and the risk of a nuclear disaster. With a rated output of 6,000 megawatts, the Zaporizhzhya nuclear power plant was the most powerful nuclear power plant in Europe until the Russian war of aggression.
