After several nights of Russian air strikes on the Ukrainian energy system, the power cuts in Ukraine have been significantly extended once again. In a statement, the state utility Ukrenergo (Ukrenerho in Ukrainian) listed the capital Kiev and eleven other areas in the east and center of the country where consumers will have their power cut off for longer periods of time. This also included Kharkiv, Poltava, Dnipropetrovsk and Zaporizhia. The previous plans for staggered shutdowns have been temporarily suspended, it said.

Diesel generators are running in Kiev

According to reports, for many districts in Kiev this means that there will only be electricity for around 12 hours throughout the day. In many cases, the water is also cut off along with the electricity in homes. Many stores, restaurants and banks are maintaining emergency operations with diesel generators.

The Russian army caused further damage to the energy system with heavy air strikes on Monday and Tuesday. According to the military, Ukraine was able to fend off 2 out of 3 missiles and 60 out of 74 combat drones on Thursday night. Russia had already severely damaged many Ukrainian power plants in the spring. As a result, concerns are growing in Ukraine about an extremely difficult third winter of war.
