The utility company Ukrenergo announced scheduled shutdowns for hours this Monday as well. In the eastern Ukrainian city of Kharkiv, which has a population of over a million, the subway managed to get back into operation in the morning after a two-day shutdown.
"Repair teams, energy suppliers and municipal services are currently working around the clock in most regions - everyone is involved," said President Volodymyr Zelenskyi in his video message on Sunday evening. "The restoration is ongoing, and although the situation is difficult, thousands of people are still working to stabilize the system and repair the damage."
Attack on power plants and grids
Russia attacked Ukraine again on Saturday night with hundreds of drones and dozens of missiles. In a new tactic, not only electricity generation, i.e. power plants, are being targeted as in previous winters. Substations, lines and other parts of the grid are also being destroyed.
According to many Ukrainians, Moscow's aim is to make life in the cities impossible and trigger a new wave of refugees. According to reports, the Kharkiv and Poltava regions were particularly affected by power cuts at the weekend.
On Monday night, the Ukrainian air force again recorded numerous drone attacks. The Russian army also deployed Kinschal hypersonic missiles.
