The Czech Republic's National Security Council is to decide on the future of the country's ammunition initiative for Ukraine on January 7. This was announced by the new head of government Andrej Babis after a cabinet meeting in Prague. In principle, the ammunition initiative was a good thing, but the question arises as to whether everything took place without corruption and abuse of office, said the 71-year-old. The billionaire and leader of the right-wing populist ANO party had already repeatedly criticized the project during the election campaign.

Germany among the previous donors

The Ministry of Defense has been instructed to prepare documents to terminate its role in the project, according to parliamentary speaker Tomio Okamura. According to official figures, more than 1.8 million rounds of large-caliber ammunition have been delivered to Ukraine this year as part of the initiative. Since the beginning, more than four million rounds have already been delivered. The shells come from third countries. Germany, Denmark and the Netherlands are among the largest donors to the project.

During his visit to Prague in May, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky expressed his gratitude for the initiative and praised its effectiveness. Ukraine has a persistently high demand for artillery ammunition to defend itself against the Russian aggressor. A new cabinet consisting of Babis' ANO and two extremely right-wing minor parties, Freedom and Direct Democracy (SPD) and the Motorists party, has been in power in the Czech Republic for just over a week.
