According to President Viola Amherd, the current challenges can only be solved together. Polarization is not the solution, said Amherd at the federal celebration on Wednesday evening in Möriken-Wildegg AG.

"We may speak different languages, but we don't talk past each other," said the President of the Swiss Confederation, according to the speech text. "We may have intense and tough debates, but we include everyone."

This was thanks to an "incredible achievement by Switzerland". 150 years ago, Switzerland introduced the referendum and thus direct democracy with a constitutional reform. This was based on the idea of giving the voice of the individual as much weight as possible.

Democracy needs citizens who nurture it and participate in it, said Amherd. Democracy places the responsibility on each and every individual to use their voice.

This leads to a common understanding and goals can be achieved together. She hoped that the country and the people would tackle the tasks with courage and confidence.

Amherd noted that she had been impressed by how the people and volunteers in the affected areas had stood together and helped each other during the storm damage in recent weeks.

On the village square of the Hollywood star

Incidentally, the celebration on the eve of August 1st took place in Möriken-Wildegg on Yul Brynner Square. The village square was created ten years ago in honor of Hollywood actor Yul Brynner ("The Magnificent Seven"), who died in 1985.

The Oscar-winning actor, whose trademark was a full bald head, was a citizen of this Aargau municipality. He had renounced his American citizenship.
