According to the South Korean news agency Yonhap, the chairman of the South Korean ruling party, Han Dong Hoon, said that he considered it necessary for President Yoon to immediately refrain from carrying out his official duties for the time being. He initially left open whether he would vote in favor of the opposition's motion to initiate impeachment proceedings on Saturday.
On Thursday, Han Dong Hoon had said that he would try to get his party to vote against such a motion. Now he said he saw the danger that the president could once again take radical action. Late on Tuesday evening (local time), Yoon had surprisingly declared martial law in force and lifted it again a few hours later after massive political resistance. It was the first time since South Korea's transition to democracy at the end of the 1980s that the country's head of state had imposed martial law.
The opposition then submitted a motion for impeachment proceedings in parliament. It is to be put to the vote on Saturday. The largest opposition party accuses the conservative head of state of breaching the constitution and is calling for his immediate resignation.
