Prince Harry is demanding respect from US President Donald Trump for the sacrifices of American Nato allies in Afghanistan. The younger son of King Charles III made this clear in an unusually sharply worded statement.

US President Donald Trump had previously caused an uproar in the UK and Poland with disparaging remarks about Nato troops in Afghanistan. In an interview on Fox News, Trump claimed that the USA had never needed the defense alliance. Although several NATO states had sent troops to Afghanistan after September 11, 2001, they had remained "somewhat off the front lines", according to the US president.

This probably prompted Afghanistan veteran Harry to abandon his previous restraint in his comments on the US President. He pointed out that the USA was the only NATO state to ever declare a state of alliance after the attacks of September 11, 2001. On the Afghanistan mission, he said: "I served there, I made friends for life. And I lost friends. The UK alone has lost 457 military personnel." Thousands of lives have been changed forever, parents have had to bury their children and children have lost their parents. "These victims deserve to be spoken about with truth and respect (...)", the Royal continued.

Harry was at times targeted by the Maga movement

Working with war veterans and bereaved families is a cause close to Harry's heart. With the Invictus Games, he has created an international competition for wounded veterans that attracts a great deal of attention and was held in Düsseldorf in 2023.

The Duke of Sussex left the inner circle of the royal family around six years ago and lives with his wife Duchess Meghan and their two children in the US state of California. Recently, the two have been much less critical of Trump. Harry was at times targeted by the Maga movement (Make America Great Again): After he admitted to using drugs in his autobiography, Trump supporters called for a review of his residency status in the US.
