Thousands of people have protested in the Australian coastal metropolis of Sydney against Israel's military action in the Gaza Strip and the situation of the civilian population there. According to the Australian news agency AAP, the police estimated the number of participants at around 25,000. During the demonstration, people also marched across Sydney's iconic harbor bridge, the Harbour Bridge.
In addition to Australian politicians, most notably from the Labor Party, WikiLeaks co-founder Julian Assange also took part, as can be seen in photos. According to the report, the police had previously warned that they would intervene immediately if a peaceful protest turned violent. According to the report, the demonstration took place against the wishes of Chris Minns, Premier of the state of New South Wales: He had spoken of the city descending into chaos.
Australia's former foreign minister, Bob Carr, also took part in the protest march and said in a statement that Australians wanted Israel's government to end the humanitarian blockade and the killing and starvation in the Gaza Strip.

The unprecedented massacre and hostage-taking triggered the Gaza war. Since then, according to the Hamas-controlled health authority, more than 60,000 people have been killed in the sealed-off coastal area. The figure, which cannot be independently verified, does not distinguish between civilians and fighters. Israel stresses that it is not fighting against the population in the tightly sealed coastal strip, but against the Islamist terrorist organization Hamas.
