A blue helmet soldier was killed when a projectile exploded in a UN peacekeeping position in Lebanon. Another was seriously injured in the incident in the south of the country, according to the UN observer mission Unifil.
"No one who serves peace should lose their life," warned the United Nations mission.
It was initially unclear where the projectile came from. Investigations were launched to clarify the exact circumstances. Attacks on Unifil troops constitute a serious violation of international humanitarian law, the mission added.
In Lebanon, fighting between the Iranian-backed Hezbollah militia and Israel has flared up again in the course of the Iran war. The blue helmet soldiers are repeatedly caught between the fronts in the border area with Israel.
The United Nations has stationed blue helmet soldiers in the border region since 1978. Around 7,500 soldiers from almost 50 countries are currently involved.
