In the USA, numerous people have once again taken to the streets in protest against President Donald Trump's policies. Under the slogan "Fight the Trump Takeover", organizers called for protests in around 300 cities. One focal point was the city of Austin in the state of Texas, where around 5,000 people demonstrated according to local media reports - primarily against the redistricting planned by Trump's Republicans.

Protest against tactical redistricting

The background to this is the balance of power in the US Congress, which consists of two chambers: the House of Representatives and the Senate. Under Trump, the Republicans currently have a narrow majority in both chambers. Before the congressional elections in November 2026, the Republicans want to change several constituencies in Texas in their favor - with possible effects on the balance of power in the House of Representatives. The targeted drawing of constituency boundaries is known as "gerrymandering" in the USA. Both parties use this tactic to systematically gain advantages in elections.

More protests against Trump than in 2017

Since Trump's second inauguration at the end of January, there have been significantly more demonstrations in the United States than during his first term in office. This is according to counts by the "Crowd Consortium" at Harvard University. In mid-June, several million people took to the streets in "No Kings" protests - the mass protest is considered one of the largest in US history.
