Protests continue in the US after deadly officer-involved shooting

Demonstrations were also held in many other parts of the United States, as reported by the news channel CNN and other US media - including New York, Los Angeles and Washington, as well as cities such as Portland and San Antonio.

An alliance of civil rights and immigrant organizations had called for nationwide protests over the weekend under the slogan "ICE Out For Good". Many participants demanded an end to ICE operations against migrants and the prosecution of the agent who fired the fatal shots, as can be seen in pictures.

Government blames woman who was killed

Good was shot dead in Minneapolis on Wednesday. According to the authorities, she had blocked the road with her car during an ICE operation. An ICE officer approached on foot, walked around Good's car and also filmed her approaching him. She did not follow the instructions of another officer to get out of the car, instead she set the car in motion. At least two shots were then fired. The 37-year-old suffered a head injury and was pronounced dead at the hospital.

The Department of Homeland Security - to which ICE belongs - and US President Donald Trump accused Good of attempting to run over the officer, who in turn acted in self-defense. The mayor of Minneapolis, Jacob Frey, contradicted the account of the shooting as self-defense and called for a transparent investigation. He also called on the ICE authority to leave the city. Videos of the incident show the ICE agent can be seen to the left of the car, veering to the right - away from him - as he fires.

Good, a white U.S. citizen, was a poet and mother of three children, ages 6, 12 and 15, according to media reports. Her wife, Becca Good, was present at the incident and can be seen on a video telling the filming officer seconds before the shooting: "You want to mess with us? I'm telling you, get something to eat, big boy."

"Pure sunshine"

In a statement released to local media, Becca Good described her slain wife as "pure sunshine". "Renee was a Christian and knew that all religions teach basically the same truth: We are here to love one another, to care for one another, and to protect and preserve one another," it continued.

According to Becca Good, the couple had gone to the ICE operation to support their neighbors. "We had whistles, they had guns."

Also in Minneapolis, African-American George Floyd was killed in a brutal police operation in 2020. This sparked demonstrations against racism and police violence across the country.
