The foreign policy advisor to Russian President Vladimir Putin, Yuri Ushakov, has expressed his disapproval of the US proposal for a 30-day ceasefire in the Ukraine war.

"This is nothing more than a respite for the Ukrainian military, nothing more," Ushakov told the Russian TV station Rossiya 1. He also explained this to the US National Security Advisor Mike Waltz in a telephone conversation, the Russian state news agency Tass quoted from the interview.

"Our goal is rather a long-term peace settlement, that is what we are aiming for, a peace settlement that takes our legitimate interests into account," Ushakov said. Putin will make a comprehensive statement on Ukraine today after a meeting with the Belarusian head of state Alexander Lukashenko, the advisor announced.

The USA had proposed a ceasefire during talks with Ukraine in Saudi Arabia and at least won over the attacked country. US special envoy Steve Witkoff was expected in Moscow to discuss the idea with the Russian side.
