Russian President Vladimir Putin, in uniform, was briefed by his general staff on alleged new conquests in Ukraine. Putin's appearance in uniform shortly before a meeting between Ukrainian head of state Volodymyr Zelensky and US President Donald Trump planned for this Sunday in Florida is probably no coincidence. The Kremlin leader has long been calling on Zelensky to withdraw Ukrainian troops in the Donbass as a way to achieve a ceasefire. Selensky, however, repeatedly accuses Putin of lying about alleged conquests. He rejects surrender.

Putin said that Russia could also annex the Donbass - which includes the Donetsk and Luhansk regions - militarily. In a clip published by the Kremlin on Saturday evening, he accused Zelensky of having no interest in a peace agreement.

"And if the power apparatus in Kiev is not prepared to settle the matter peacefully, then we will solve all the tasks ahead of us by force of arms as part of the special military operation," Putin said. Special military operation is the official term in Russia for the war of aggression against Ukraine that began in 2022.

Moscow claims to have taken Myrnohrad and Huljajpole

This time it was claimed that the city of Myrnohrad in the Donetsk region had been taken. Following the capture of Siversk in the north of the Donetsk region, the way is now clear for the large city of Sloviansk, claimed Chief of General Staff Valery Gerasimov. He said that Russian troops were advancing along the entire front line.

According to Russian military information, the city of Hulyaypole in the Zaporizhzhya region was also captured. Ukraine has not confirmed a possible fall of the cities. Not only Ukrainian experts, but also military bloggers loyal to Moscow have recently repeatedly stated that the Russian Ministry of Defense is being informed by the commanders on the ground, who are under pressure to succeed, about alleged successes that do not exist. The information from the front line can hardly be independently verified.

Ukraine has been defending itself against the Russian invasion for almost four years with Western help. The Ukrainian president wants to discuss a possible peace plan with US President Trump this Sunday. In view of the massive Russian attacks on Ukraine with drones and missiles, he accused Putin of having no interest in peace.
