Russian President Vladimir Putin has assured the authoritarian Venezuelan head of state, Nicolás Maduro, of his support amid growing tensions between the South American country and the USA. In a telephone conversation with Maduro, Putin emphasized the new strategic partnership between the two countries and assured the Venezuelan people of Russia's solidarity, the Kremlin announced in Moscow.

According to the statement, Putin endorsed Maduro's course of "protecting the country's national interests and sovereignty in the face of growing external pressure". There was no mention of military assistance from Russia in the wake of the tensions with the USA in the Kremlin statement. In the past, Moscow had also sent Russian military experts to the country. There were no indications that Russia might drop Maduro - like the long-supported Syrian ruler Bashar al-Assad - and grant him asylum.

Russia warns against escalation of the situation in Venezuela

"Both sides reaffirmed their readiness to consistently implement joint projects in the areas of trade, economy, energy, finance, culture, humanitarian affairs and other areas," the Kremlin statement said. The Russian Foreign Ministry had previously demanded clarity from the USA regarding the plans in Venezuela.

Moscow hopes that Washington will not allow a further escalation of the situation in Venezuela and will not go to war, said Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova in Moscow. She warned that there was a danger that the conflict would lead to unforeseeable consequences for the entire West.

Although Russia is also considered an important arms supplier for Venezuela, it is bound by its war of aggression against Ukraine. Putin is also negotiating with Trump to end the war in Ukraine and improve relations with the USA.
