The Gulf state of Qatar has assured Syria of natural gas supplies for its power supply.

This was reported by the state news agency Sana, citing the chargé d'affaires of the Qatari embassy in Damascus. The gas is to be transported via Jordan and the volume is to be gradually increased.
There is a shortage of electricity in Syria due to the civil war and the accompanying international sanctions. In some cases, households are only supplied for a few hours a day. During the civil war, Syria relied on supplies from Iran, one of the closest allies of ousted ruler Bashar al-Assad, among others.
The Gulf emirate broke off relations with Syria after the outbreak of the civil war in 2011. During the war, Qatar supported the opposition politically and financially.
Since the overthrow of Assad by a rebel alliance, Qatar and Syria have come closer again under the new leadership. According to observers, Qatar is one of the countries that is gaining the most influence as a result of the upheaval in Syria.
