Security forces of the moderate Palestinian Authority in the West Bank have reportedly taken action against members of the Islamist Hamas and the Palestinian Islamic Jihad in the city of Jenin.

According to the official Palestinian news agency Wafa, a 19-year-old was killed and a 16-year-old was critically injured by a shot to the head.

The aim of the operation against "outlaws", which lasted several days, was to restore security and order, emphasized the Palestinian Authority. Jenin in the north of the Israeli-occupied West Bank is considered a stronghold of violent Islamists. Israeli police and military units are also frequently deployed there.

There have been many arrests, said a spokesman for the Palestinian security forces Wafa. Mines and booby traps that extremists had prepared for attacks on Israeli units had also been removed.

Hamas and the Palestinian Islamic Jihad, which are fighting against Israel in the Gaza Strip, accused the Palestinian Authority of collaborating with Israel to break the resistance in the region.
