According to experts, the strictly protected species reacts extremely sensitively to human proximity and immediately returns to the sea if disturbed.
New videos circulated on social networks on Christmas Day showing the animal on the shore, followed by a quick retreat into the water. One incident in the early hours of the morning, in which a photographer is said to have approached the sleeping seal, has been particularly criticized. The animal then woke up and fled into the sea.
Online, it was suggested that a voluntary citizens' initiative be set up to monitor the seal's whereabouts and ensure it keeps its distance. Authorities and organizations for the protection of marine fauna have also been called upon to take action. The aim is to protect the presence of the monk seal, which is unusual for the Adriatic, and to prevent further disturbance by humans.
