For example, a hairdresser's store in Lesotho is shown, where a researcher is investigating whether it could also serve as an alternative space for certain health services. Or a backlit portrait of an archaeology team with Swiss and Malagasy researchers. A depiction of an experiment in a wind tunnel and a video sequence with nanoscale oscillations of an electromechanical system are also among the twenty award-winning works.
Tanja Gesell, president of the jury for the SNSF competition, was quoted in a press release on Tuesday as saying that the diversity of the 430 works submitted was impressive. The images are a "unique means" of promoting dialog between science and society, she continued. This is more necessary today than ever before.
16 works were specially honored by the jury. These included a mesmerizing depiction of flight paths or the inside of an experimental device. Eleven of the twenty award-winning images were created by students or doctoral candidates. All works will be exhibited at the Biel/Bienne Photo Days from May 3 to 25.
