Dozens of people queued at the Öncüpinar border crossing in Kilis province on Wednesday morning to cross into Syria, a reporter told the German Press Agency.
A local official said that on Monday - the first day after Assad's fall - around 700 people had passed through this crossing, after which the number had decreased. The newspaper "Cumhuriyet" reported, citing authorities, that around a thousand people crossed the border at the Cilvegözü crossing further west yesterday. The migration authorities are increasing staff to deal with the applications.
Several border crossings in southern Turkey are currently open for the passage of Syrians. The responsible Ministry of the Interior did not initially comment on the number of border crossings when asked by dpa.
Turkey has taken in the most refugees from Syria worldwide; according to the UN, around three million are currently still living in the country.
