The number of passengers using Treni Regionali Ticino Lombardia (Tilo) has risen by 50 percent since 2019. The opening of the Ceneri Base Tunnel in 2020 also contributed to this.

The commissioning of the Mendrisio-Varese railroad line in 2018 and the introduction of new stops also influenced this development, according to a press release issued by the company on Thursday.

Tilo transported a total of 25 million passengers last year. In 2019, the figure was 16.7 million, according to the company. Compared to the previous year, Tilo 2025 recorded an increase of 3.7 percent in passengers.

This means that the number of passengers has more than doubled since 2016 (12.3 million passengers). According to the press release, 20 percent of passengers used Tilo trains to travel between the two regions of Ticino and Lombardy last year.

New daily record figures were set last October, when Tilo transported an average of almost 88,000 passengers per day. An average of 16,400 Tilo passengers used Milano Centrale station every day that month.

In Lombardy, Tilo has also recorded an improvement in punctuality over the past year, particularly on the RE80 line, which connects Milano Centrale with Lugano and Locarno.
