This is according to the current "Global Report on Food Crises". The crisis is particularly concentrated in just a few countries: Most of those affected live in just ten countries, such as Afghanistan, Sudan and Yemen.
Overall, acute food insecurity has doubled over the past ten years, according to the report. The extent of hunger remains alarmingly high. The report highlights that last year, for the first time in the report's history, two famines were declared - in a government district of the Gaza Strip and in parts of Sudan.
Outlook for 2026 remains bleak
Looking ahead to the current year, the network paints a bleak picture: ongoing conflicts, climatic conditions and global economic uncertainty are likely to keep the situation in many countries at a critical level or even worsen, it says. In particular, the escalation of the conflict in the Middle East could further exacerbate the situation in certain countries and regions. However, it is still too early to make a precise assessment.
