The homicide in Basel on August 8, 2024 would have been difficult to prevent - but there were blind spots in the treatment of the alleged repeat offender. This is the conclusion of the external investigation report published on Tuesday.

"Particularly in view of the vagueness of the offense mechanism and the possible risk relevance of the crime scene, these are omissions that prevented the case from being handled optimally," says the report by forensic psychiatrist Frank Urbaniok and lawyer Andreas Werren. The significance of the property, where the accused had already killed two people in 2014, had been given too little consideration.
The new homicide, "almost a copy of the first murder", is a treacherous case. The risk of recidivism was hardly recognizable for the psychiatric clinic and the prison. The authorities had done "formally everything correctly". In this case, it was not too little but - on the contrary - too much regulation that was problematic, according to the report.
