According to activists, the death toll has risen to more than 200 in fighting between troops of the Syrian transitional government and armed supporters of the long-term ruler Bashar al-Assad, who was toppled last year. At least 93 security forces of the interim government and 120 armed attackers are among the dead, reported the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.

The fighting is concentrated in the governorate of Latakia, a stronghold of the Alawite religious minority, to which Assad also belongs. Following attacks by Assad sympathizers on Thursday, the fighting escalated yesterday. According to the Observatory, there was also fighting near two hospitals in the provincial capital, with casualties on both sides. The number of victims could rise further.
According to the UK-based Observatory, which is following the conflict through a network of informants, more than 160 civilians, including women and children, are said to have been executed by fighters of the new rulers. Interim President Ahmed al-Sharaa declared on Friday that anyone who commits abuses against civilians will be severely punished. However, he did not mention reports of massacres.
