The Palestinian news agency Wafa reported that the fatal incident took place in the center of the city in the south of the coastal area. The Israeli army said that two suspects had approached Israeli troops in the south of the Gaza Strip and posed an immediate threat. The soldiers then fired at them.
The first phase of a ceasefire agreement between Israel and the Islamist Hamas came to an end at the weekend. So far, the two sides have been unable to agree on the terms of an extension.
According to the agreement, Israel's armed forces should have already begun the gradual withdrawal from a corridor along the Gaza Strip's border with Egypt and completed it around a week later. However, Israel's Defense Minister Israel Katz made it clear that the soldiers would remain stationed in the so-called Philadelphi Corridor. Israel wants to prevent Hamas from smuggling weapons back into Gaza through tunnels under the border.
