In the midst of the discussion about a possible end to US mediation in the Ukraine war, primarily due to the Kremlin's stalling policy, a new trial balloon has been launched by the US, according to a report. The US could be prepared to recognize Crimea as Russian territory, the Bloomberg agency reported, citing informed sources. Russia occupied the Ukrainian Black Sea peninsula in 2014 and then annexed it in violation of international law following a referendum controlled by Moscow.

According to Bloomberg, such a concession could be a signal from US President Donald Trump, who wants to bring about a ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine at all costs. So far, Russia in particular has rejected these efforts, while Ukraine has shown itself willing to engage in peace talks. However, Bloomberg's interlocutors pointed out that no final decision had yet been made in the discussions about Crimea.
Kiev has not yet commented on these ideas. However, Ukraine categorically refuses to relinquish the parts of the country occupied by Russia. This applies to both Crimea and the territories in eastern Ukraine, which Moscow has also already incorporated into the Russian state in violation of international law. The West categorically rejects recognition of the occupied territories as Russian. So far, this also applies to the USA.
Washington wants to quickly reach a deal to end the war in Ukraine - and otherwise possibly stop its efforts. He wants to see an agreement "very soon", Trump said in the White House. He did not specify how many days this meant.
At the same time, the US President emphasized that he had no interest in continuing his mediation efforts if both sides were unwilling to compromise. "If for some reason one of the two parties makes it very difficult, we will simply say: You are stupid. You're fools, you're terrible people, and we'll just let it go," he said. "But hopefully we won't have to do that."
