The Ukrainian General Staff also reported on the strike against the boarding school used as emergency accommodation. According to the report, a Russian glide bomb fell on the building. There was initially no official statement from the Russian side.
Kiev: search and rescue work underway
There were sounds and screams under the rubble, said Dmytrashkovsky. The Ukrainian forces had begun search and rescue work. According to reports, many of the people housed there were unable to walk on their own.
According to the Ukrainian General Staff, the residents were being prepared for evacuation when the bomb hit. The Russian side had been informed that only residents, including women and children, were in the building. The information could not be independently verified.
Kursk region has been heavily contested for almost six months
Russian military bloggers also reported that the building in Sudzha had been hit. They reported that rockets had been fired from the neighboring Ukrainian region of Sumy in the direction of Sudzha.
The region has been heavily contested since Ukrainian troops crossed the border with Russia at the beginning of August and took control of dozens of villages in the Kursk region. Recently, there have been repeated reports of civilian deaths in the region during Russian counterattacks. Moscow's military has repeatedly announced the recapture of the Kursk region.
