With the so-called Health Technology Assessment (HTA), the federal government systematically scrutinizes medical services. The aim is to identify ineffective therapies and expects to make recurring savings every year, which are constantly increasing.

The review process was introduced in 2017. At the time, the Federal Council set itself the goal of using the methodology to curb cost growth in the healthcare system by CHF 220 million per year in the medium and long term.

In mid-2022, the federal government stated that the HTA analyses carried out up to that point had saved CHF 35 million per year in costs for basic insurance. According to a report published by the Federal Council on Wednesday, the savings now amount to CHF 150 million per year.
