One month after the parliamentary elections in the Czech Republic, billionaire and former Prime Minister Andrej Babis has forged an EU-critical government alliance with two parties on the far right.

His right-wing populist ANO movement signed a coalition agreement in Prague with the motorists' party Motorists and the ultra-right Freedom and Direct Democracy (SPD). "We will have a lot of work, we are ready," said Babis. In their program, the future partners promise to assert national interests: "We want a different Europe."
President decides
However, the ball is now in the court of President and ex-Nato General Petr Pavel. Because in the Czech Republic, the parliament does not elect the prime minister. The president appoints the head of government, who must then win the confidence of parliament. It is not yet clear when these steps will take place, but possibly not until December. The ANO, Motorists and SPD together hold 108 of the 200 seats in the House of Representatives, which was due to convene for its first session of the new legislative period on Monday.
Alliance promises "zero tolerance towards illegal migration"
In the draft of their program, the likely coalition partners announce a "zero tolerance towards illegal migration". They promise lower energy prices, an end to the broadcasting fee and the reintroduction of the pension from 65. They reject the euro and want to enshrine the retention of the crown in the constitution. Organizations financed from abroad are to disclose their donors in future. Meanwhile, the EU's Green Deal is criticized as "untenable" and the European migration and asylum package is rejected outright.
NATO critics to be appointed defense minister
An annex to the coalition agreement stipulates that the ANO will appoint the head of government and eight cabinet members. It was the strongest party in the election at the beginning of October with 34.5 percent of the vote. The Motorists are to take over the environment, culture, sport and foreign ministries. Among other things, the SPD is to head the Ministry of Defense, although the party had spoken out in favour of a referendum on leaving NATO and the EU during the election campaign. However, party leader Tomio Okamura was unable to push through this demand in the coalition talks.
