The parliamentary elections in the Czech Republic look like a clear victory for the opposition. After half of all constituencies have been counted, the right-wing populist ANO of former head of government Andrej Babis has received around 38 percent of the vote. The center-right alliance Spolu (Together) of Prime Minister Petr Fiala only achieved around 20 percent according to the partial results. The mayoral party STAN, which has been in government until now, is at just under 11 percent. A new motorists' party (Motorists for themselves) and the ultra-right Freedom and Direct Democracy are also likely to make it into parliament and are considered possible coalition partners for Babis.

The votes are counted continuously. As a rule, the results from small rural constituencies are available first, while those from large cities are not available until later. Changes can therefore not be ruled out. More than eight million people were called upon to fill the 200 seats in the Chamber of Deputies, the more important of the two chambers of parliament.

Dispute over support for Ukraine

During the election campaign, the poll favorite Babis had announced an end to his country's arms deliveries to Ukraine. He also promised lower taxes and cheaper energy prices. The governing coalition, on the other hand, warned of threats from Russia and announced a gradual increase in defense spending. "Everything is at stake now" was their slogan.
