In Bangladesh, the death of a well-known activist has triggered violent protests across the country. In the capital Dhaka, an angry crowd vandalized the offices of the newspapers "The Daily Star" and "Prothom Alo" on Friday night and set them on fire. This was reported by both newspapers and other local media. There were initially no reports of casualties.

The protests broke out after the death of Sharif Osman Hadi - a leading figure in last year's mass protests that led to the fall of the government of the increasingly authoritarian Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. Hasina fled to India, where she has since been granted protection. Hadi was also known as a critic of the government in the neighboring country.
Activist fell victim to assassination attempt
Hadi was the target of an assassination attempt in Dhaka last week. The 32-year-old died of his injuries in a hospital in Singapore, where he was taken for treatment. Investigators suspect that the assassins fled to India.
Participants in the current protests accuse "The Daily Star" and "Prothom Alo" of serving Indian interests. During the destruction of the "Prothom Alo" office, they shouted slogans directed against the neighboring country, among other things, as reported by the news portal "bdnews24".
According to local media reports, there were also riots in other cities. In the northern city of Rajshahi, the rioters destroyed an office of Hasina's Awami League party with a bulldozer.
