Former SP National Councillor Roger Nordmann is running to replace Vaud State Councillor Rebecca Ruiz in the by-election on March 8. The SP Lausanne announced this in a press release on Wednesday.

"After a few days of reflection, I have decided to submit my candidacy for the State Council in order to represent our left-wing values," Nordmann is quoted as saying in the press release. Last February, the 52-year-old announced his resignation from the National Council, of which he had been a member since November 2004.

At the time, he said he was leaving politics at least temporarily and did not rule out a return. He explained that he needed a break and wanted to be less exposed.

During his time in Bern, Nordmann was a member of the National Council's Energy and Environment Committee, among other things. He also chaired the SP parliamentary group from 2015 to 2023.

First social democratic candidate

He is the first SP candidate to announce his candidacy to defend the second Social Democratic seat in the Vaud government after Health and Social Affairs Minister Rebecca Ruiz announced her resignation last week for health reasons.

Candidates have until December 6 to submit their candidacy. The party conference of the SP Vaud, which will determine the official candidacy, will take place on December 13. The Greens have already announced that they will support the SP candidacy and will therefore not be sending anyone into the race.

Commons support SVP candidate

So far, only the SVP has nominated its candidate for this supplementary election: Jean-François Thuillard, Grand Councillor and former President of the Grand Council. The farmer is also the mayor of Froideville. He is supported by the FDP and the center within the "Alliance vaudoise".
