Thousands of supporters of the far-right and pro-Kremlin former presidential candidate Calin Georgescu have demonstrated in Bucharest for the resignation of social democratic Prime Minister Marcel Ciolacu. They also demanded that the annulment of the first round of the last presidential election, in which Georgescu came first, be reversed. The demonstrators accused Ciolacu of corruption, Romanian media reported.

Georgescu wants to run for president again. The public prosecutor's office recently began investigating him on suspicion of "inciting actions against the constitutional order" and founding a fascist organization. According to media reports, he is also suspected of having contact with an illegally armed group. According to the public prosecutor's office, 16 members of this group have been in custody since Friday on suspicion of "attempted attacks against the constitutional order". A few days ago, the police took Georgescu away for several hours of questioning by the public prosecutors. He has now been released on conditional release.
Right-wing parliamentary party supports Georgescu
According to some media reports, several tens of thousands of people attended the rally, including many on buses from the provinces. The rally was called by the opposition right-wing populist parliamentary party AUR, which supports Georgescu. AUR is part of the European Conservatives and Reformists (ECR) group in the EU Parliament, led by Italy's Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni.
Georgescu had surprisingly won the first round of the presidential election in Romania on November 24. Shortly before the run-off election, the Constitutional Court annulled the first round due to irregularities in campaign financing. The election has to be repeated. The next date is May 4. The Constitutional Court will have to decide whether Georgescu will be allowed to run again.
