A good two months before the repeat presidential election, Romania's parliament has dismissed the head of the electoral authority, according to media reports.

The vote against Toni Grebla was passed by a large majority after he lost the confidence of the bourgeois-social democratic governing coalition. The motion was put forward by the leadership of the House of Representatives.

One of the reasons given was that Grebla had damaged the reputation of his office. Romanian media had previously reported that Grebla had cultivated friendly contacts with the far-right and pro-Kremlin former presidential candidate Calin Georgescu.

The public prosecutor's office is investigating Georgescu on suspicion of "inciting actions against the constitutional order" and founding a fascist organization. A few days ago, the police took him away for several hours of questioning by the public prosecutor's office. He is now at large under conditions.

First round of the election was annulled

Georgescu had surprisingly won the first round of the presidential election in Romania on November 24. Shortly before the run-off election, the Constitutional Court annulled the first round due to irregularities in campaign financing. The election has to be repeated. The next date is May 4. The Constitutional Court will have to decide whether Georgescu will be allowed to run again.
