Following negotiations with Ukraine and its European supporters, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has announced changes to the peace plan to end the war in Ukraine. He said at a joint press conference with the Ukrainian chief negotiator Andrij Jermak that a "very good working result had been achieved, based on the contributions of all parties involved".

Jermak spoke of a "very productive" first meeting at which good progress had been made. They are moving towards a just and lasting peace. According to him, final decisions will be made by "our presidents". He thanked the USA and US President Donald Trump - who had previously once again accused Kiev of a lack of gratitude.

Rubio said that the differences with Russia should now be reduced and a solution worked out with which both Ukraine and the USA would be satisfied. He expressed confidence that Trump would ultimately give his approval for the new plan.

Russia attacked Ukraine on February 24, 2022. Since then, the country has been defending itself with the help of Western supporters, including the European Union and the United States.

He expressed confidence that US President Donald Trump would ultimately give his approval for the new plan.

Rubio had met with representatives from Europe

The US Secretary of State took part in a meeting in Geneva at the level of advisors to the heads of state and government - he is also Trump's National Security Advisor. Representatives from Germany, France, the UK, the EU and Ukraine wanted to discuss the plan at the meeting. The aim of the Europeans is to avert what they see as unacceptable concessions to Russia.
