Russia has massively bombarded Ukraine with missiles, cruise missiles and drones from the air. Observers in Kiev speak of one of the heaviest air strikes in two and a half years of war.

Explosions were reported in the areas surrounding the capital and the regions of Zhytomir, Khmelnytskyi, Ternopil and Lviv, according to the official air alert app. In Kiev, there are problems with the power supply, as Mayor Vitali Klitschko announced on Telegram.

Eleven Russian long-range bombers in the air

According to the Ukrainian air force, the Russian army temporarily deployed eleven Tu-95 long-range bombers, which carry cruise missiles. In addition, Kinschal hypersonic missiles were fired at Ukraine. Ukraine was also fired at from the Black Sea.

An overview of casualties and damage is not yet available. One death was reported from Lutsk and one from the Dnipropetrovsk region. According to initial information, the Ukrainian energy system was once again one of the main targets of the attack. The energy supplier Ukrenerho imposed emergency shutdowns. The air alert was still in place at 10.00 a.m. local time (9.00 a.m. CEST).

Poland lets fighter jets take off

Due to the proximity of the Russian attacks to the Polish border, the Polish military launched interceptor jets, as reported by the PAP news agency. Aircraft from other allies were also reportedly involved in the operation. Ukraine has been fending off a major Russian invasion since February 2022. On Saturday, Europe's second-largest country celebrated its 33rd Independence Day.
