The 69-year-old Mikhail Volkov is accused of financing an extremist organization, the state news agency Tass reported, citing security agencies.
Volkov, who has emigrated abroad and is one of the most important confidants of the Kremlin opponent Alexei Navalny, who died in custody, confirmed the search of his parents' house on Telegram. He denied an arrest. "Technology was confiscated from them and they will be taken for further investigation," he said.
Anti-corruption organization now banned
According to the allegations known so far, Volkov's father is said to have transferred money to the Foundation for Fighting Corruption (FBK) founded by Navalny. Volkov is considered a key figure in FBK. The organization has exposed numerous corruption scandals involving high-ranking Russian politicians, including Kremlin leader Vladimir Putin. It is now banned in Russia as extremist.
Mikhail Volkov is a mathematician and was a professor at the university in the megacity of Yekaterinburg in the Ural Mountains. He was dismissed in February because of him, his son has now announced, accusing the authorities of "clan detention". In Putin's view, his father had committed two crimes. The first is that he is his father, the second is that he is an honest person, said Volkov.
