Witkoff, who has already met Russian President Vladimir Putin several times in Moscow, is leading the US delegation in talks with Moscow and Kiev to end the war in Ukraine.
Several media outlets recently reported that Russia was providing Iran with information about US forces and possible targets in the Middle East. The Kremlin is providing Tehran with location information and movement data on American troops, ships and aircraft, reported the US broadcaster CNN and the Washington Post.
Trump: If Russia does it, it doesn't do it well
When asked whether he believed Russia was doing this, Witkoff said he hoped not. President Donald Trump, for his part, initially said that the USA had no evidence of this, but later also stated that they did not know. If Russia did, the country would not be doing particularly well, he said - because things were not going well with Iran.
Russia is not officially involved in the war. Moscow and Tehran have previously cooperated in the field of armaments, for example Iran supplied Russia with Shahed drones at the beginning of the war in Ukraine. However, military assistance or major arms deliveries for the partner in the Middle East do not appear to be on the cards at present. In view of the war of aggression against Ukraine, Russian capacities are already heavily utilized.
