At least 55 people were injured, announced Mayor Vitali Klitschko, head of the civil administration. 40 of them had to be treated in hospital.
Fires had broken out in 27 locations, announced Interior Minister Ihor Klymenko. Residential buildings, educational institutions and important infrastructure facilities were affected. Klitschko also reported numerous fires on Telegram. More than 40 apartments were destroyed in a high-rise building. According to a report by the portal "The Kyiv Independent", reporters heard the sounds of drones and rockets and numerous explosions in the city. The news agency RBK-Ukraine reported that there were power cuts.
A 62-year-old US citizen in Kiev died during the attack, Klitschko announced. Doctors had determined that he had died of natural causes.
Drones also on Odessa
Numerous drones were also fired at the port city of Odessa on the Black Sea. The regional military administration reported 13 casualties.
Ukraine has been defending itself against a large-scale Russian invasion for more than three years. Kiev is usually better protected by air defenses than other cities in the country. Nevertheless, the capital is also repeatedly hit by heavy attacks using drones or missiles.
Russia also attacked Ukraine with numerous drones on Sunday night. According to Ukrainian reports, Russia fired a total of around 140 drones and their imitations. According to the Ukrainian air force, 125 were intercepted. The scale of the attack was therefore significantly smaller than last week, when Russia deployed almost 500 drones in one night. The air force's report on Monday night is still pending.
