The heads of state and government from Egypt, Jordan and the Gulf states are expected to meet in Riyadh on Friday, as the German Press Agency has learned from Arab diplomatic circles. Among other things, they will discuss Egypt's proposals for the reconstruction of the heavily damaged coastal area under the "full supervision" of Arab countries.
US President Donald Trump had caused unrest with a controversial proposal to permanently relocate the approximately two million inhabitants of Gaza to Arab states. Egypt, Jordan and other Arab countries in the region are strictly opposed to such plans. With its own plan for the reconstruction of Gaza, Egypt wants to prevent the USA and its ally Israel from pushing ahead with Trump's proposal.
According to the latest UN estimates, the reconstruction of the Gaza Strip could cost around 53 billion US dollars, including 20 billion US dollars in the first three years alone. It remains to be seen who will pay for the reconstruction.
