German Chancellor Olaf Scholz held a telephone conversation with US President-elect Donald Trump on Sunday evening. According to government spokesperson Steffen Hebestreit, the conversation lasted around 30 minutes and took place in a very friendly and constructive atmosphere.
The exchange focused on bilateral relations between Germany and the United States. Important foreign policy issues were also addressed, with Ukraine playing a central role.
When asked whether Trump had reaffirmed his support for Ukraine, Hebestreit referred to the confidential nature of the conversation and expressed doubts that this topic had been discussed in depth. Rather, it was a conversation that served as a mutual exchange of information. Both politicians agreed to continue the dialog.
The Federal Press Office had already reported on the telephone conversation on Monday night. Scholz offered Trump the opportunity to continue the decades of successful cooperation between the governments of the two countries.
Scholz also congratulated Trump personally on his election victory. In their conversation, both politicians emphasized their shared intention to restore peace in Europe.
